Every day Marley was reminded of how lucky he was. He didn’t have to worry about being hunted by the other races who lived on the world that had been the home of his grandparents. No one really talked much about what they’d left behind, or who, but there were still Nox Gadael arriving on Taithmarin who did have to deal with the hunters. Whenever he saw one, and they were easy to recognise because their eyes were haunted by the fear they hadn’t been able to rid themselves of, he was grateful that he had been born on a world that was safe for his race.

It was safe for Marley to walk from his home, a home he shared with three Alati Felis and a human, to the market, where he could purchase whatever he wanted with money he’d earned. He had no idea what it was like to sleep in a cold cave, never feeling safe, not knowing when his next meal was going to be, but he’d heard stories about it and knew he should never take his luckiness for granted. There were Gadael his age stepping through the door who had lost parents, grandparents, and siblings to the hunters, while all his relatives were still alive.

As Marley made his way into the market he knew he was also lucky enough to have been taught how to use his abilities. That was why he was making his way to a magic shop owned by one of his closest friends, who had arrived on Taithmarin as a pup and was adopted by Marley’s mother. It was something she did, knowing that even young Gadael needed time to deal with the memories they had of what they’d left behind, and she was good with dealing with their bad dreams. During his time in his mother’s home she adopted six different pups, all of whom had become good friends.

Maybe, if the Gadael knew how to use their abilities, things would be different on their home world. Blaine thought it was possible, but there was no way back and for that Marley was exceedingly thankful, because he knew Blaine would go if he could. He knew he’d left siblings behind that he would have tried to save, even though it seemed unlikely that he’d even be able to find them. Vague memories of a cave that seemed pretty much like all the other caves weren’t a good place to start.

Other Gadael walked through the market, some Marley knew and greeted, and others he recognised as new arrivals. He knew almost all of the Gadael in Riverside, because of his mother. She was not just the Gadael who took in lost pups, but also one of the strongest healers in their town. When he was younger he worked by her side, wanting to be just like her, until he had to help a Gadael who stepped through one of the doors having been caught by one of the hunters not long before. It had been horrible and after that he knew he wasn’t cut out to be a healer.
