The day Ziva left and didn’t return was the worst day of his life. Ethan could easily have found himself with a vampire who abused the humans they bought from the auction, but he’d been lucky. She’d cared for her four humans, doing everything in her power to make certain she didn’t turn them into addicts, so he would have been happy to stay with her for the rest of his life if that had been what she wanted too. It hadn’t been until Kyle walked into the house, to tell them that Ziva had died, that Ethan had any idea how bad things could be for auctioned humans, even though he’d heard stories the same way everyone else had.

Kyle took the four of them back with him, saying that Ziva would have been happy for him to have them because she was his sister. None of them believed him, as she’d never mentioned her vampiric family before, but they’d had no choice. Once he’d picked up their documents they were his. They didn’t have time to pack. He hustled them into his car with only the clothes they were wearing, promising to purchase them new clothes when they arrived at his… he’d called it a house, even though the word he should have used to describe it was mansion. Compared to the three bedroom terraced house Ziva had lived in it was massive.

When Ethan looked at his companions he could see the worry in their eyes. As the oldest, and the one who had been with their owner the longest, they looked up to him, so he knew he had to do his best not to show that he was feeling the same way. Instead he took hold of Chloe’s hand, because she was the youngest of them, waiting until their new owner let them out of the car, and led them all into their new residence. He didn’t want to, but his options were limited. It wasn’t a surprise when they were taken to a locked upstairs room, that Kyle unlocked with a key from around his neck, before being told that was their room and getting locked in.

As Chloe started crying Ethan wrapped his arms around her. There were six sleeping bags in the room, two of which had people on, and as his eyes met theirs he knew what their new owner would be like. He’d always know Ziva was nothing like her siblings but to see the state the two abused humans told him everything. Breathing deeply he put Chloe onto one of the sleeping bags, even though they were filthy, and took the one next to her, as he tried to work out what he could do to free them from the hell they had found themselves in.

“Where did you come from?” one of the boys asked. “You don’t look like you’ve just been auctioned.”

Shaking his head Ethan thought about not telling them anything, but that was pointless. “Our owner died and he’s her sibling, so he took us.”
