The web was created by the fae to collect magic from the worlds they had created and, as the world in the centre of the web, the plan was for Athare to have the most magic. However they didn’t know until almost a century after the last world was created if it was actually working or if the whole plan had just been a waste of both time and magic, which would lead to the fae having to flee to yet another new world. This lack of knowledge didn’t stop most of them from using magic as they would have done on their old home world, even though the World Walkers Council attempted to teach them how to live without magic.

It later became used as the walkers route through the worlds. Often walkers will learn about a strand of worlds in order to make their journeys through the web easier, otherwise they would have to use temporary tattoos in order to travel through one world to get to another. There are walkers who simply make their choices based on which worlds they would most like to visit and have no problem with the temporary tattoos. Occasionally temporary doors are created, normally if the world the walker has to travel through is dangerous in some way, but these never last longer than an hour. If a temporary door is created then it’s always watched closely by a walker until it fades away. The only other time a temporary door is created is if there is a door malfunction. Normally they’re easy to solve, but as the doors get older there are more malfunctions.

The ‘demons’ have more choices as to the route they take, because of the way the magic of the worlds work. Taithmarin has no connections to any of the worlds the fae created, because it wanted nothing to do with the fae, but still allows Athare to occasionally draw off any excess magic for use by the races who have to use magic from the core of the world. It views Athare as its mother and the fae as its father. The magic it gathers can also be used by the worlds surrounding it on the web, who it views as siblings, but this rarely happens. Gaelom, however, has more connections than the walkers know about, that can only be used by ‘demons’. If either the fae or the walkers had tried to utilise the doors there is every chance that they would have moved.

The Nox Gadael (or Night Leaves) are a race of magical talking dogs with horns. All are the size of a labrador, but they come in a multitude of colours instead of the known yellow, black or chocolate. Their horn resembles that of a unicorn, although they are nothing like unicorns, and are usually a shade darker or lighter than their body. In some ways they are very like dogs, as they are loyal to the people they care about and do enjoy living with the other races if they are not within a pack. Generally pack ties are looser than family ties and those who live with one of the other races view that person or people as family. There are ways in which they are very unlike dogs, including their love of trade, and there are many shops owned by the Nox Gadael in the mixed centres of the many towns they live in.

Unless they trust the people around them they keep their magical abilities a closely guarded secret. This is due to the way they were treated on their home world, a place they don’t often talk about, but their magic has evolved on Taithmarin to give them an innate understanding of who they can and can’t trust. If you can get one of the Nox Gadael to talk about their home planet their stories are normally full of being hunted by those who wanted to use their horns and tails, because of the magic held within both, and loss, as many of them lost family or pack members because of the hunters. Taithmarin is the only place any of the first generation have ever felt safe, which is why the door choose the race as one to inhabit it.

They’re nocturnal. In order to make the most of normal shopping hours, when most of the other races are awake, a Nox Gadael shop owner will hire staff from those races. Exactly which race depends on the town, but in general the Nox Gadael are friendly and get along with all the other races that live on Taithmarin. The only race they occasionally have problems with is the human race, but this is always due to human being anable to accept a dog is talking to him/her.

Magic’s third phase is when it is condensed from ambient magic into core magic. This happens in several ways, depending on the world, who lives there, and how much of an effect the world itself can have on the process. Unfortunately the fae’s old world wasn’t sentient enough to have any effect on the process, so it would have had to relied on evolution and there simply wasn’t enough time when it realised what was happening. Athare has more options. It can rely on evolution: in some cases a species of animal will evolve into a condenser, but this is relatively rare; normally it will be a plant species that evolves, often trees, due to their connection to both ambient and core magic; and occasionally a race of people will evolve. Normal weather cycles, not those affected by the fae, also help to condense ambient magic into core magic, especially when combined with a plant species (or several, depending on the area).

Many of the newly created worlds take the time to evolve races of people and species of plants for use as condensers, because the fae have no understanding of the way the phases of magic work. If they took the time it would have been easy enough to work out, because it was the loss of several species of plant that had a huge effect on how their old world condensed ambient magic into core magic. The races that evolve as condensers can be magical or non-magical, but they often don’t know how important they are to the ecosystem of the world they live on. Without someone studying magic many races also have no idea how important some of the species of plant are with keeping the amount of core magic at safe levels for the world.

Taithmarin, Aerith, and Kankirin all evolved differently, due to the way they felt about being a part of the world web. Aerith and Kankirin had no interest in being a part of the web in the same way as the other worlds, but didn’t go to the extreme that Taithmarin did in making sure that the fae left and never came back. They all share magic with Athare and sibling worlds if they need it, because the magic in the web needs to stay balanced in order for all the worlds to exist.

When the fae use the magic in such a way that it is poisoned there are also species of plants that deal with this. The core of Athare does its best to make sure that it doesn’t allow any poisoned magic in, because otherwise it will affect all the other worlds. If poisoned magic enters the core of any of the other planets via the world itself then they can isolate it until it’s cleansed, but the magic of Athare works slightly differently, as it was Athare’s magic that was used to create the other worlds and the world web, so it’s permanently moving around the web.

Mira stepped through the door, knowing that she had no other choice. A single tear trickled down her cheek. Being a ‘demon’ was both a blessing and a curse right at the moment. It meant she was safe from… she didn’t know exactly who it was, but she knew that her entire family was dead because of someone, as she’d could leave Raenarin behind. At the same time being alive when they were all gone was more painful than anything that had happened before. For the first time in her life she was entirely alone, on a world she didn’t know, and all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry.
