A tear trickled down Rex’s cheek as he looked at the car. He’d promised himself he would protect the children of his friends and sister, because he hadn’t been able to protect his friends, and seeing Melody’s car with a tree in the bonnet meant that he’d once again failed. Slowly he walked towards it, knowing that she would never have been able to survive the crash, wanting to say sorry for being useless, when a faint noise caught his attention. It was coming from the car, so he sped up, wondering if maybe, against all odds, she had survived such a huge accident.
Carefully Rex opened the door, not wanting to hurt Melody more by doing things too fast, and asked, “Are you alive?”
He didn’t expect an answer, but Melody replied, her voice faint, “Just about.” After a few seconds of silence she continued, “Call an ambulance.”
Rex shook his head. “It won’t get here fast enough, but I can help you if you want me to.” Melody raised an eyebrow and he took that to be her questioning him. “I’m a vampire and giving you my blood will save your life. There are disadvantages. You’ll be immortal and have to drink human blood for the rest of your very long life.”
There was a long silence. Biting his lip Rex waited for an answer, hoping she wouldn’t die before she made her mind up, and tried not to stare at her. “Who are you?” she asked, her voice even fainter than it was before.
“I’m Rex.”
Rex was the name he’d chosen when he’d become a vampire, so Melody wouldn’t connect him with any stories she may have heard about the boy he had been before he’d been changed. It was still strange to think that his best friend was a father while he would never get a chance to age, let alone have children. Sighing he watched her, knowing that she needed to make her mind up soon, but he didn’t want to push her.
“Will I be able to see my family again?”
Other vampires would have said no, like Rex’s creator had. Rex remembered how much he’d wanted to see his family, even though he knew it was likely that they’d never accept him as a vampire, but by the time he’d managed to free himself from his creator it had been too late. They’d mourned him for over a decade and there was no way he was going to hurt them by walking back into their lives, which was why he watched them instead.
“Yes, you will.”
“Change me.”
Nodding, Rex knelt down next to the car and carefully moved Melody’s head so it was easier to get to her neck. “This is going to hurt to begin with, but the pain fades.”
“Pain is relative,” she said, sounding amused.
“True.”
As gently as he could Rex bit into Melody’s neck, trying not to feel guilty when he heard her whimper in pain. He couldn’t be sure if the pain was caused by another part of her body or him, so he focused on what he needed to do in order to save her life, and finally pressed his arm to her mouth to let her drink from him.
