Staring out of the window just reminded Rynne of how much her life had changed, but there was nothing else to do. Most of the time she was just grateful to be alive, because she had been sure that he was going to kill her, until he’d told her she had a choice to make. Life, even life in the astral, was better than being dead, so it had been a relatively easy decision to make. The only difficult thing had been leaving behind her girls, knowing that Jaya was going to take over. If it had been anyone else Rynne wouldn’t have worried quite so much, but Jaya was a liability as the leader of a safe house.

Amber had been Rynne’s choice. Unfortunately Amber hadn’t wanted to take on the responsibility of running a safe house, which was understandable, so it went to the council’s choice. Rynne agreed that Jaya was a good thief, one of the best in any of the safe houses, but being a good thief didn’t make that person leader material. Every day Rynne waited to hear news that her safe house had been infiltrated by the magicians, because she knew without any doubt that it was going to happen. It was just a case of when.

He wasn’t scared of letting her know about the astral, because Rynne knew she could never go back. No thief who ever found themselves captured by the magicians could go back, although they could visit occasionally, so she made the most of having been taken by someone who would talk to her. For the first time in her life she actually understood why the magicians had made the choices they had and she didn’t blame them for doing what they could to survive. Sighing, she looked back at the book he’d given her, wondering if there was some way of getting her girls to understand.

Rynne shook her head, smiling. A few of them might, like Amber and Ruby, but the rest had been trained not to look past what they were doing for the good of the human race. Magic was something they believed everyone should have, instead of just the few who chose to live in the astral, even though there were people who Rynne believed should never be given something as powerful. Like Jaya. If only Rynne had seen past the mask before, but Jaya had been too good an actress.

“Can I…” she started, glancing over at where he was sat at his desk, before trailing off.

He lifted his head and smiled at her. “Amber will be here soon enough and then the two of you can work something out together?”

“She won’t give in to Christophe.”

“Maybe not, but Chris isn’t the sort of person to give up either. Now that I have you he’s going to do everything he can to get Amber to stay in the astral with him, because he knows that female magicians are much stronger than male magicians.”
