All I could do was stare at him. “Miles is your grandfather?”
“Yes, unfortunately. I don’t doubt he’d quite like me back as well, but that’s never going to happen, because the Unity is my home. Even though it’s not perfect it is so much better than the Brotherhood. I’m happy with the decision that I made – and it was mine. At the Brotherhood there were so many things I did that had been decided by other people, normally Miles, as he was so certain he knew what was right for me, in the same way he believed he knew what was right for everyone he chose to be his favourite. He wasn’t the same way with any of my siblings or my father, so I get the feeling his interest was purely based on my abilities.” He shrugged. “What he seemed to be doing was gathering people together who could be his own private army.”
I nodded. “I got the feeling that he wanted to take over from Daniel. Apparently things have changed between the two of them and now they’re barely civil to each other. When I managed to escape it was thanks to him, so I believe the rumours I heard were true, otherwise he never would have done something like that.”
“They’ve always had issues. Miles wanted to make a move much sooner than Daniel, but Daniel managed to convince him that moving too soon would lead to the end of the Brotherhood. Now Daniel seems to have put it off indefinitely.” He shrugged. “I have no idea what he’s thinking, although I hope that is actually what he’s doing now, because from everything I heard he seemed to be the sort of person to act spontaneously at all times.”
“Which is why Conrad’s alive now.”
“Exactly. If it hadn’t been for Daniel’s decision to bring Conrad, and Miriam, back from the dead, we wouldn’t have three leaders at the Unity. Honestly I’m not certain that it would even exist if it wasn’t for the three of them working together, as there are times when I think, no matter how much they care about each other, Kara might actually kill Lucas.”
“How do you know that?”
“Unfortunately there have been at least a couple of times when I’ve witnessed them arguing.” He shook his head. “If I didn’t know that they loved each other I’d be really worried, but that love is enough to stop them from actually hurting each other most of the time. Sometimes, though… Kara has got calmer with every life that she’s lived. There are just times when her anger gets the better of her and the way they were always taught to deal with that was to use it. When they know they’re getting to that point they go to one of the practice rooms. We don’t know what happens in there and I think it’s better than way, but they always leave feeling much calmer about everything. Occasionally I think that’s their favourite thing about their relationship.”
