Kelly nodded. “That makes sense. It’ll just be the two of us to begin with and I doubt we’ll have enough people by winter to need to heat the whole school, although we will need to think about who goes where.”
“I keep wondering if it might be better to go for somewhere smaller, but I really am hoping to have a large group of people in the end, so we’ll need the space. Especially as the time will come when people will want to have families and they’ll want their own space within the community.” Finn shrugged. “We do need to plan for the distant future as well as tomorrow, although I do wonder if we’ll even get to that point. Getting through the first winter…”
“Don’t. Our future isn’t the one we planned for when we were children and it’s not something I ever wanted to happen, but it is something we can live through – I do truly believe that. What I wonder is if I really want to. Before, no matter how many reports I wrote to the contrary, I didn’t really think anything this bad could happen, so being the one to be lucky enough to not have the injection was different then. In the end I watched all but one of my colleagues die.” Kelly sighed. “The choices the World Government made were, obviously, not the right ones, and yet… those reports about how this was what they wanted keep running through my mind, because what if this is what they wanted? Are they really going to be coming for the children who were left behind? What about the other survivors?”
“Anything is possible, Kelly, but I think it’s doubtful that they did plan on this happening. They might well have prepared for the possibility, the same way many other people did, but I don’t believe this was what they wanted to cause, although I’m willing to admit I might be wrong about that.” Finn ran a hand through his hair. “Had they known what the injection would do I believe they would have stopped their wives and children from having it. If I was in that position and I knew that the injection was going to do I’d have paid the fine for the people I loved, no matter what. It would not have matted to me that I was meant to be showing the world that it was safe.”
“What if they just went in and didn’t really have the injection?”
“It’s possible. Unfortunately we aren’t going to know what happened, Kelly, unless the day does come when the World Government come hunting for us, and if it does I don’t think there will be anything we can do to stop them, as they will have been much better prepared for this than we ever could be, so I think the only thing we should be doing is preparing for winter as best we can. That’s what all the other survivors should be doing, but I don’t know how much anyone really knows about living in a world without supermarkets.”
