Part 1

“How do we get to this other world?” Christophe asked, stalling for time as he tried to work out whether he really should do something that seemed so stupid. Going anywhere with a total stranger was going to end up being a mistake, he was certain of that, but that didn’t change the fact he really was tempted. “You mentioned doors before.”

“There is a door that leads from there to here that I can take you to. It isn’t far and then you can make your decision, because you won’t be able to until you know whether there really is another world. We can spend hours sitting here, I could tell you everything you’d need to know about it, but there would be still be no way for you to know for certaint that it did truly exist until you go there.”

Christophe nodded, as it was true, but that didn’t mean he actually thought it was a good idea to go wandering off somewhere. “Is there nothing you can show me that might make me more comfortable going with you?”

“Unfortunately, not. We have enemies, Christophe, and if I was to bring anything with me they would be much more likely to find me. Fortunately they’re very unlikely to recognise my face, as they’ve never seen it, so you aren’t in any danger now, although I admit that you will be if you chose to stay on the other world. They won’t know that you’ve travelled there if you don’t chose to stay.”

Even the mention of enemies didn’t put him off and that was something that worried him slightly. Had losing his job really affected the way he thought that much? Was the thought of going back to live with his parents really enough to convince him to do something quite so stupid? Christophe sipped his drink again. Finally, even though he knew that he was doing something utterly insane, he looked at the stranger and smiled. “Take me to the door.”

“Your wish is my command.”

Both the stranger and Christophe stood. “Do I need to take anything with me?”

“It’s better that you don’t. Should you chose to stay your life will change for good and it is important that you let go of the life you once led here, as it won’t mean anything to you when you’re there.”

“Okay.” Christophe wasn’t entirely happy about that, but it was still a better option than going back to live with his parents while he tried to find another job, which would probably be one he didn’t want and had to take anyway so he could pay his parents rent. “How is my life going to change?”

“Being an apprentice magician isn’t something that’s easy, so for the first three or four years you will be entirely focused on you studies. I will be your mentor and I will guide you, I will teach you what I know, and, I hope, you will come to be the magician I believe you can be if you really do focus.”
