“Do you have a name?” Alice asked.
“Faron.”
There was a long silence. Garion was about to say something when Alice made a sound that told him more about the vampire he was with than he really wanted to know and he found himself looking at Faron, who just shrugged. Vampires could change. Having spent so much time with the Donor House vampires he knew that for certain, but if Faron was someone Alice was worried about… Luckily Garion had never been someone who showed how he was feeling externally, which was probably what made him such a good police officer, and so he waited until she was ready to tell him what he needed to know.
“Give me a couple of minutes to get hold of Nick. I’ll send him, Blake, and someone else, whoever I can get hold of that I… ah, perfect… Luc, I need your help.”
“What with?”
Alice wasn’t using speaker phone, but Jean-Luc speaking loud enough for Garion to be able to hear with what his friends had a habit of calling his super hearing, probably on purpose. “Garion found a vampire, somewhere, and I need you to go collect him, with Nick and Blake.”
“We’re at the pier.”
“At the pier.”
“Nick and Blake?” Jean-Luc sounded as though he couldn’t quite believe all three of them would really be needed. “Who is it?”
“Faron.”
“Seriously?”
“It’s the name he gave Garion and I have no reason to disbelieve it is him.”
“Give me the phone,” Faron said, sounding almost amused, and Garion did just that. “Yes, Alice, it is me; yes, I have decided to visit the Donor House; and, no, I’m not planning on doing anything to it. I know what you must be thinking, but I’m doing this for me. Even someone like me can eventually come to the realisation that the choices I’ve made are not the best one I could have, and I was hoping that you would give me a chance.”
“You have that, Faron. The only reason I want three vampires coming to get you is because I know how hard it is for people like you and I don’t want anything to happen that might affect the decision you have made. Please be careful with Garion. He means a lot to us, so if you were to hurt him…”
“I will do everything I can to make certain that doesn’t happen. It’s not every man who’d dare to walk over to a vampire who’d been attacked and that’s exactly what he did.” Faron smiled. “I like him already, so if he is the type of person you have in the House I think it might actually be the home I’ve been desperately hunting for.”
“When did you leave him?”
“A year ago. I thought about coming to the Donor House before, but it wasn’t until recently that I let go of my belief that you wouldn’t let me in. Other vampires, vampires I never thought you’d give a chance, have been permitted to enter, so I decided that unless I gave it a try I’d never know. This is me giving it a try.”
