“Electra, meet Broc. Broc, this is Electra.” Alexis looked at Electra. “Broc was owned by one of the gamers, before he was sold on to someone who didn’t care anywhere near as much, and that’s how he ended up out here.”

With that in mind Electra knelt and studied Broc, seeing the damaged that had been caused by more than one battle, which made her shake her head. “Oh, Broc,” she said, running her fingers over his back.

“He’s not a gamer any more. It was too late for me, I’d already been discarded, but the other creatures he owned were passed on to people who look after them properly.”

“I think I can fix this.”

Broc shook his head. “There are others who are suffering much more pain that I am, Electra. Look after them first.”

Nodding, she smiled at him. “I will, but between then and now I’ll get out some of Menolly’s potions. She won’t mind me sharing them with you.”

“You know Menolly?”

“She’s my younger sister.”

“Might we know any other members of your family?”

“If any of you have ever been in the auctions you might know Brendan, my brother.”

Three cats came forward, cats Electra had known as kittens, and she found herself blinking tears out of her eyes. “We made sure you went to a good home.”

“You did,” Casimir replied. “We stayed there for a year, but then he disappeared. His mother, who inherited everything, sold us, to pay off his gaming debts, and we ended up in the ownership of someone who used us badly. Luckily we found Alexis. He helped us, the same way he helped all the others, and we told him about you.”

“Lots of creatures told me about you, Electra.” Alexis smiled. “They all trusted you, so I decided it was time I came to talk to you, and it appears that I was right to do so. We all appreciate the help you’ve already given us.”

“There’s still more to do, Alexis.” She smiled back at him. “I’ll get the potions from Menolly’s cupboard and then I’ll have a look to see who the most injured creature is.”

“Are you sure?” Broc asked. “Life clay isn’t cheap and we can’t pay you for the help.”

“We can, actually,” Casimir replied, smiling. “There are some of us who chose to escape, Electra, and we’re willing to game for you, if that would help with the costs.”

Electra bit her lip. “I know nothing about it. Out of all of us Menolly knows the most, but…”

Casimir shook his head. “You don’t need to know anything, Electra. We can guide you, because we know how to game. There are creatures in your shed who have been gaming for centuries, walked away, and are willing to go back now for you. Almost all the creatures know of you and when they find out you were willing to take us in there will be more knocking on your door.”
