Part 1

Stela smiled. “I think this door is in a good place for dragging people through time. When I found myself here I was lucky enough to meet someone who was willing to help me, so I’ll be taking you to her. She’s gone through this all herself and was a great person to have around when I was first learning about this time. Last time I saw her she said she was waiting for someone and I think that someone might be you.”

“Why would she be waiting for me?”

“That is something she’ll explain when you get there. I did ask, but she wouldn’t tell me, because it wasn’t information that I needed. She just told me to be on the look out for someone like you and to take you to her when I found you.” Stela bit her lip. “Being worried is understandable. Not wanting to trust either of us is too. It’s just… having been in such a difficult position herself she does her best to help people, as she didn’t have any help herself when she first found herself in this time.”

“She could have come herself.”

“If we’d known when you were coming she would have done. Me being here at the right time was good luck. She would have wandered by at least a couple of time today, she’d have spent time in the market, and if she was the one to find you she would have made you the same offer I did.” Stela reached out a hand. “Do you want our help?”

Lorelei studied Stela. There was nothing about her that made Lorelei think she was lying, but the thought of someone waiting for her… it made her feel uncomfortable, even though it probably shouldn’t. She had three seers in her own family and they’d all told her recently that she’d be going on a long journey. It hadn’t crossed her mind that the long journey might be through time, rather than just ending up on a world the other side of the Web. Finally, still not certain she was making the right decision, she took Stela’s hand.

“Yes, I do.”

Fortunately it didn’t take them long to get to wherever it was they were going. Lorelei was beginning to feel tired, as it had been evening when she left, but she knew she was going to have to deal with the change of time as best she could. She’d always hated dealing with that, but it was always much harder when you went from evening to morning or morning to evening. Whenever she travelled she did her best to make certain that she arrived on the other world within about three hours of when she left. It didn’t always work out, so there were times when she had to deal with the same thing, and that meant she knew she could do it, although it wasn’t going to be easy.

“Go in, Lorelei. I’ll head back to my own cottage for an hour and then come back, to give you time to talk to her alone.”
