Part 1

“That’s not going to be easy.” Gage looked at Linnea and she could see the worry in his eyes. “I think it’s a wonderful way of looking at things, but it’s going to be a lot of work and you need to be certain that you’re ready for something like this.”

Linnea nodded. “Gage, I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. Your ad’s been in the paper for six weeks now and, even though I may still be scared, I am ready.” She bit her lip. “I think I’m ready. Doing this is a huge step in the right direction.”

“You’re right.” He gestured for her to follow him. “I’ll show you the room, I’ll give you an idea of how this is going to work, and then take a couple of days to think about it. From what you said a test run isn’t going to work for you, so that’s the best way I can think of doing things.” He sighed. “I want to tell you not to take this room because you think it’s your only option, but if that’s really what you think, if life wherever you’re living now is that bad, I know it’s not going to work.”

For the first time Linnea smiled a real smile. “No, it’s not.” She stared at his back as they made their way upstairs. “Why do you want a lodger?”

“Company, mostly.” Gage glanced over his shoulder at her. “I visit the donor house three or four evenings a week, and I enjoy it there, but then I come back to an empty house. For a while a couple of the new arrivals lived here and I got used to having someone in the house, so renting one of my free rooms out to a lodger seemed the best way of filling it again.”

“Why advertise for a human lodger?”

“Some of my best friends at the house are human and as I’ve never had a chance to actually live with a human before, because the house didn’t exist, I thought it was something that might work for me. Plus I know that there are humans who want to give us a chance, but aren’t ready for something like the donor house. When I first went I felt overwhelmed and I’m a vampire – I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for the new human new arrivals who aren’t sure what to expect.”

“I did load the application form a couple of times,” Linnea admitted. “I even started filling it in. For a moment I honestly thought I could do it, I could become a donor at the house, but then my fear started getting the better of me, and I stopped.” She wiped another tear away. “Even though I was young I still remember what happened and the thought of being around a group of vampires, no matter how nice they were, scared me so badly that it made me realise I couldn’t do it in real life. Not yet. Then I saw you advert in the local paper.”

No typos found.

I like how their relationship is beginning to unfold. Gage gives Linnea as much choice as possible, but recognizes how circumstances are limiting their options.

I will have to re-read it but am currently confused by his use of "the house" for both the donor house and his house.
