The first thing that crossed Poppy’s mind, as she stood there staring at the bodies of her parents, was that it would be really easy to go back to her bed and never get back up again. Even when her stomach loudly reminded her that it hadn’t been fed in days. Her family hadn’t planned for the possibility of someone dying from the injection, she hadn’t let herself think it was possible that something so permanent would happen, but it had, and her only real option was to deal with what had happened as best she could. Slowly she left her parents bedroom, biting hard on her lip as she tried to think what she should do next, before making her way downstairs to the kitchen.
None of the normal lights were on in the lounge as Poppy passed through it, which told her that there was, at the very least, a power cut. She didn’t let herself think that it wasn’t going to come back. When she got to the kitchen it was obvious the power hadn’t been off for long. The freezer still seemed to be frozen and, without really thinking about it, she opened it and pulled out a tub of ice cream. It wasn’t the most nutritious of meals, but she thought it was something that wouldn’t last much longer so it was the best thing to eat considering the circumstances.
With a spoon in her hand Poppy sat down at the table, took the lid off the tub, and dug in. She knew she should be thinking about what her next step was going to be, but it was one of the hardest things she’d ever had to do. The injection was just meant to be a contractive. In the newspaper reports they said it hadn’t been tested properly and it might have adverse affects on anyone who had it, but it being the cause of anyone’s death seemed impossible. Until it happened. Glancing up at the ceiling she told herself to focus. Nothing could be done to change what had happened and if other people had been affected then things were going to be difficult for a while. Being able to watch the new would have been really helpful right at that moment, because then she’d have some idea of exactly how difficult things were going to be.
Biting hard on her lip again Poppy looked at the microwave. She wanted the power to come back, because if it didn’t… That meant things she probably didn’t really want to think about, but needed to. If the world had changed she needed to know what she was going to do next. A part of her wanted to stay in her house, where she felt comfortable, and the rest of her told her that staying there, a lone female with no real weapons, was a huge mistake. Of course she wasn’t going to be safe when she left the house behind, but it was the logical thing to do. Maybe she’d even get lucky and find a group of people she could stay with, at least for a while.
