Part 1

The smile Hecate gave Persephone betrayed her amusement. “The fae won’t listen to us, Sephy.” As though she’d just though of something her smile turned into a frown, her forehead wrinkled. “It is possible, however, that the races they create will… if they go through with it.”

“Mab has no choice, because it’s the elders who are certain that the path they want to take is the right one, and if she goes against the elders she’ll lose her crown.”

“Does Mab still even want to be Queen?”

“I don’t think she does, but she’s in a position of power where she can have a limiting effect on the other families. Even though she may not be able to do as much as she hopes to it does mean that she won’t walk away yet.”

Hecate nodded. “Talking to her won’t change things for the fae, but it may change things for Mab.” Staring down into the pool once more she sighed. “Being Queen is lonely and she’s not allowing anyone to help her. We both know what she’s like.”

Over the years Persephone and Hecate had spent at least a few hours every week watching the fae. It didn’t matter that there was no connection between the fae and the deities, because that wasn’t something that they’d ever really wanted. They just happened to be a fascinating race who were amazingly good at two things: pretending that things weren’t happening to them and hiding the truth from their descendants so they could make the same mistakes again. So far the fae had destroyed three different worlds, but they didn’t know about them due to the destruction of their history by both the elders and the monarchs.

Without really stopping to think Persephone sent her awareness to Athare. She could feel it when Hecate followed her and she couldn’t help breathing a sigh of relief. Mab stared at both of them when they appeared. Anger was the first thing Persephone saw in her eyes, followed by a mix of hope and fear, and then finally resignation. It wasn’t as though the three of them hadn’t talked before, futilely, so it was likely that she thought the same thing would happen again.

“Hecate, Persephone, it’s nice to see you both again,” Mab greeted, bowing her head in gesture of respect.

Even though they’d never been able to agree they did have respect for each other, most of the time. Persephone still wasn’t happy with the choice that Mab had made during the meeting with Willow, but things might have been different if the Queen had known that her race had done the same thing before. As their eyes met Persephone smiled at Mab.

“How are you?” Persephone asked, hoping that Mab heard the concern in her voice.

“I’ve been better.” Mab shook her head. “I should have listened to Willow, but I let my elders convince me that the princess couldn’t possible be right, and that made me nastier to her than I should have been. She was doing what she thought was best for her race in the same way that I thought I was doing what was best.”
