In the Donor House collection vampires are not restricted to a blood only diet, but this doesn't mean that they don't have a blood only diet. This is more through choice than neccessity as a vampire can eat and drink in the same way they did when they were a human.

Blood keeps the vampire's body working normally (for a vampire) and if a vampire doesn't drink regularly, usually around three times a week at least, then their body will begin to fail. Most vampires have no idea what it feels like and they're very happy to keep it that way. Those that have been through it refuse to describe exactly what it's like and just go for 'painful' or a similar adjective. It's rather like those milkshakes that diet companies sell that are said to have everything in them that the body needs. Most vampires are picky about who they eat from because they think that the human having a good diet will be better for them.

Vampires don't feel hunger, although a younger vampire may feel like they do. It's a leftover feeling from being human that fades after a few weeks. They don't actually need to eat food to keep their body working. No one truly understands exactly how a vampire's body works and they probably never will, because no vampire has ever wanted to be cut up in the name of science. Younger vampires, mostly those under the age of fifty, find it comforting to stick to their old routines, even though they have become nocturnal. Often you won't find older vampires eating food because it's really quite a pointless endeavor. As a vampire ages they often find that food become more bland and they don't like eating. You will occasionally see a vampire with a curry or something else that is spicey. If they can't get past the thought that all food is bland then there are certain things that will have flavour to them, but it's not the norm.

You're much more likely to see an older vampire with a glass of something alcoholic in their hand. A lot of older vampires are partial to a good malt whiskey as it's one of the few things they can still taste. Alcohol doesn't actually affect them so it's possible for a vampire to get through a couple of bottles a night, especially if they're feeling down about their long lives or happy about something. Vampires very rarely drink alone. They like to share how they're feeling with their friends, who will also be vampires.
