It was then that things changed and Harrison was glad that Aurora wasn't in the crowd, because he was sure that his fear for her would have shown. “It is Sauin's Day,” the King continued, “a day we continue celebrating even though the man who created this festival was the first magic user in this kingdom. A man who, slowly, took over the Royal family at that time and made magic seem safe. Magic is not safe in any way. It has been proven that magic corrupts. Having the power to kill someone without a weapon should not be permitted to exist.” Harrison bit hard on his lip, knowing that he needed to not say anything that might endanger Aurora or anyone else. “It has come to my attention that something has changed in the last two years. Fewer people have died on their blooming day and I hope this means that magic is slowly fading from our kingdom.” Harrison forced himself not to breathe a sigh of relief. “However we still have the people in the mountains to worry about. I want you to continue being vigilant because there is every possibility that they may return to attempt a take-over.” The King drank deeply from his wine goblet. “As always I thank my Prime Minister and Head of Security for all they have done this year. I would like you all to raise your drinks and toast their wonderful work.”
Harrison raised his drink with everyone else and sipped it, wondering why his father's speech had changed from before. He was thankful because it was much shorter than it had ever been before but at the same time he was worried. Something was changing in the kingdom. Aurora was a huge part of that change because she was the reason fewer people were dying when they were blooming. The King had noticed the change and believed it was because magic was fading from the kingdom, when it actually seemed like more people were blooming that ever before. They were just blooming safely. Harrison tried to focus on the Prime Minister's speech, which thankfully hadn't changed, but he couldn't stop worrying about Aurora.
Normally Harrison spent a lot of his time worrying about his best friend. He knew that Aurora was careful but that didn't stop him from wanting to protect her all the time. As a magic user she was in danger of being banished. Looking after all the magic users in the kingdom made her the ringleader of a possible take-over and that would get her executed. Instead of looking over at the mountains he stared into his glass, wondering whether it would be possible to convince her that she would be safer there. Even if he did convince her that it would be safer he knew she wouldn't go, because she wanted to keep him safe.
Some days Harrison wished he'd never told her. Aurora didn't need anything else to worry about. He just couldn't keep it a secret any longer. The powers he had meant that the worst that could happen to him was banishment, but he'd never heard of a crown prince having powers before. It was possible that the punishment for him would be execution. At least execution would be better than what had happened to Griffin.
