The World Walkers: Jadir: Sasha: Making a Decision (part 2)

Part 1

“Sasha,” a voice said from behind her, making them both jump, and the look Olaf gave the intruder almost made her smile, “if you were to chose to walk away you are responsible for nothing. Olaf is doing his best to make you feel that way so you don’t walk away, because they’re scared of him, the same way you are, and without you to control him there’s no telling what he might do.” As she turned to look at her brother he smiled. “I know you and I know how you think. The problem is they do as well. By pushing the right buttons they think they’re going to get you to do what they want you to, but I’m not going to let that happen and I’m also not going to let them make you. If you are going to do this it will be of your own free will.”

“You weren’t meant to be here, Taras.”

“My plans changed, Olaf. Someone I trusted told me that you were waiting for the most opportune time to talk to Sasha, when you knew she would be least likely to say no, and making sure that I was out of the house was the best way to do that.”

“You’re happy to let him free, because if Sasha doesn’t take the job that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”

“Of course it is. You were too foolish to let the Walker who came to you help and now you know you don’t have any other options. If you did you would have kept him where he is, but that’s not possible any more, thanks to the stupidity of one person who jumped in too soon. Things would have been so much simpler if you’d have just let me do my job.”

“It was taking too long.”

“What did you expect when you sent me undercover? That it was going to take me a couple of days to find out what you needed.” It wasn’t a surprise that Taras sounded totally exasperated. “In order to get the information that would put him in prison for life I was going to have to gain his trust. He needed to believe that I was on his side and that was always going to take time.”

“Are you certain you weren’t beginning to think he was right?”

“No, I wasn’t.” He glared at Olaf. “That’s what you were worried about. I knew that his beliefs were wrong, I accepted that he believed they were right, and I was doing my very best to make certain that he didn’t realise that I was working on behalf of you, because the moment he did I would have been dead.”

“You never mentioned that before.” Sasha bit her lip. “What do you think I should do?”

“He’s a dangerous bastard, Sash. The one thing I know for certain he’s going to try to do is get you to work with him, because he knows who you are. I don’t doubt he knew who I was too, which was why he let me get close to him in the first place, but I could be wrong.” Taras shrugged. “Honestly I think you’d be better walking away. Your problem with that, though, is if he does do something you’re going to feel guilty for not being there to stop it, even though it wouldn’t have been your fault.”
