The Donor House: Linnea: Living with a Vampire? (part 3)
“You think you can live with one vampire.”
“Like I said I don’t have a lot of choice. Being with my sister really isn’t an option, not if I want to make something of my life, and there are very few places I can afford to rent. Finding a room I could afford, while also being able to eat, was the most important thing, so living with a vampire is something I will do if it means that I can get away from her, and her boyfriend.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” Gage’s question had no insistence in it and that made Linnea smile. “You don’t have to, because I, along with being a vampire, am a total stranger, but sometimes it does help to talk about things.”
“Sometimes.” Linnea bit her lip. “For a long time it was just me and my sister. We didn’t have anyone else, not really, even though we lived with our nan, because she needed more looking after than I did. She was the only one who could take us in, so she did. It was better than being in care, bit not by much, as my sister didn’t like having to look after both me and nan when she could be out having a life. The only reason she hasn’t kicked me out yet is because I pay her rent every month and without that rent, she says, she couldn’t pay all the bills.” That was one of the reasons it had been so hard for her to make the decision to leave. “Honestly the hardest thing has been living with her boyfriend. I didn’t know that he was going to be moving in and as soon as he did… I don’t leave my room unless it’s to go to college, because he scares me.”
“Why does he scare you?”
“He drinks and he gets angry. They argue almost every night, so I look myself in my room and do my best to ignore it, but it’s not that easy. I know they argue because I’m there. He doesn’t want me there, she doesn’t really want me there even though she needs my money, so I need to get away from them before he does something.”
“How much do you pay her?”
“£300 a month. I don’t know what she earns, but I do know a lot of it, now, goes towards his alcohol, and she’s started drinking as well.” She sighed. “He’s said she should raise my rent, as it’s not enough, even though I don’t really use anything in the house unless I have no other choice. I don’t cook, I find other places to shower and I’m really lucky I have understanding friends, and I only go home when it gets dark because the only thing worse than being trapped there would be to find myself in one of the auctions.”
“Living this close to the House means it’s unlikely that you would, but it’s not so easy to stop yourself from being scared of vampires. Trust me, I’ve been in a similar position, and honestly the rent… all I need really is for you to cover your half of the bills, everything else I can pay.”
