“Badly.” Lucifer thought, for longer than he should have, about what his answer should be. He didn’t really want a puppy, because he knew how destructive they could be, but at the same time he couldn’t help thinking that it would be nice to have a companion, for those times when Archimedes wasn’t there. “I don’t know, Archie.” Glancing around he tried not to see all the things that the puppy could chew on. “I’ve never had a pet before and I have no idea how to look after a puppy.”

“They aren’t really pets.” Archimedes sipped his hot chocolate. “Dad’s always said that Kerberus was his first friend, which is probably why he’s so strange, and I have a feeling that they have a connection that is entirely different to the one I have with Kerberus, for example, or Mum has.”

Lucifer nodded. “Maybe I should come and meet them before I make a decision.” He had a habit of avoiding Hades and Sephy’s house whenever there was puppies in it, because it was often more hassle than it was worth. “If I’m going to be living with one of them for the rest of my very long life then I should at least understand what I’m letting myself in for.”

“You know they won’t be puppies for long. Once they’ve grown up it’ll be different.” Archimedes smiled. “I avoid the house too. I keep thinking Mum might try to convince me that I should take one of them and that is something that will never happen.”

“Well, I think it would be nice for us to have a pet and you have a bigger house than me.”

“No, Archie, you just don’t want them to chew on your books, which makes my place the better option.” Lucifer shook his head. “There are lots of things here I don’t want chewed, you know.”

“Honey, you don’t have to have one. I’m not going to force you to have a dog, but it’s so quiet here most of the time, and I think you could do with having someone here who doesn’t need to leave.” Archimedes reached out and squeezed Lucifer’s shoulder. “Even though I visit as often as I can I know it’s not enough and we both know we aren’t ready for me to move in here, not yet, although, maybe, some day in the future it will happen.”

Sighing, Lucifer took a sip of his own drink. “You’ll never give up the cottage. It means too much to you and I think maybe it’s best that you don’t.” Their eyes met and Lucifer could see the pain in Archimedes’. “That doesn’t mean I don’t want you to move in, Archie. Some day you will, but we both need our own space sometimes and I think keeping the cottage would mean that you always have somewhere to go. Maybe Callie can live in there, to keep it feeling homely, so that when you’ve had enough of me you can go back for a couple of nights.”

That should say "were" above.
