Ares nodded slowly. “Hekate has always told me that what matters is how I see myself.” He brushed a hand through his hair. “It’s just hard to keep seeing me as myself, instead of the god they always saw on Earth. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice when I became one of the gods of the Greek pantheon.”

“I think there are times when we all do,” Aphrodite said, sounding far away, and Hephaestus found himself think back to the time when he had made the choice himself. “The thing you have to remember is that becoming a part of that pantheon means we are remembered now, so we can begin to put the misconceptions right. We can tell the human race about our true children and our children’s children, instead of them simply hearing the stories of those the Greeks believed were our children.”

“We can tell them who we are truly related to, instead of having them believe the stories of Aphrodite’s birth and that I was the son of Zeus.” Hephaestus shook his head, unable to believe how the Greeks had seemed to think that most of the deities were in some way related to Zeus. “Or that you were the son of Zeus.”

For the first time Ares smiled. “We are rather incestuous, aren’t we? At least according to the Greeks. You married your half-sister, if you take the story of her being the daughter of Zeus and one of his many lovers, and then I slept with her. I’m much happier knowing that none of us are closely related.”

Aphrodite also smiled. “So am I. I think it is important, and something we should talk to Hades and Sephy about, that we teach the humans of Earth what our real family tree is like.” Her smile faded. “Especially as many of the deities have chosen to move on and no one knows anything about them.”

“That’s something Hecate thought was important too. I’m sure she’ll help us to work out the family tree that we should publicise, so that at least some of the people of Earth know the true story.” Ares reached out and squeezed Aphrodite’s hand. “Now that we have a chance to speak out I think it’s important that we do. It’s time that we started teaching the worlds about who we are once again and that the many pantheons of Earth haven’t been separate the entire time, the way they seem to think we have.”

“Do you think they’re ready for that?” Hephaestus asked. “On the other worlds it wouldn’t be so much of a problem, because they don’t view us the same way the humans of Earth do.” He bit his lip. “Although it would be nice if I could tell them about my two daughters who aren’t fully Greek.” Finally he nodded. “Okay, Ares, I think you’re right. That’s something else we should talk to Sephy and Hades about.”

“Is the Earth really ready to know that their family is the strange one?”
