Crossover Kim’s Earth/Afterlife/Deities’ World: Richard: The Apocalypse is Coming (2)

Part 1

Richard stared at Hades, unable to believe one of the gods was standing in his house, but considering what he’d just said it wasn’t entirely a surprise that he would be there. Once Richard came to his senses he conjured another chair, which Hades took with a smile, as he tried to come to terms with the idea that the apocalypse was coming, and he was going to have to help the spirits who died deal with it. Breathing deeply he nodded, not sure what he was nodding to, looking around the room at his unexpected guests, who each appeared to have the weight of a world on their shoulders.

“How bad is it going to be?”

“We aren’t certain yet,” Samael replied, as he passed a glass of whiskey to Hades. “It looks about as bad as things can get, but we don’t know if what we’re seeing definitely is the future that’s coming or if it’s just a possibility.” He bit his lip. “Even Persephone isn’t certain and she had a much better view of the future than we do.”

Hades nodded. “Percy is doing her best, but there are still choices that need to be made and the real problem she has is being able to see different Earths, Earths that have a much weaker attachment to this particular part of the afterlife.”

Blinking, Richard ran his tongue over his bottom lip. “Other Earths?”

“Alternate universes, Rick.” Samael sighed. “There are more of them than even we know about, because our focus is on the Earth that we are connected to, but I don’t doubt there are others of us also having this conversation.” He glanced at Hades. “With him.”

“Being a deity is not an easy job, but fortunately there are other death gods who are helping to go around the afterlifes, as there are more of them than I could cope with alone. Each of us have tried to become friends with at least one of the angels we’ll need to be working with, in order to make things simpler, but angels aren’t always easy to get along with.” Hades shook his head. “This, though, is a conversation we should have at another time. Right now we need to be preparing for what might be coming.”

“I promise I will go back to the subject, but why was I not told about these alternate universes before?”

“Until today it wasn’t something that had come up.” Samael smiled. “It’s not something we talk about on a general basis, in part because we know as little as you do, and it’s the deities who you need to talk to if you really want to learn more. The only reason any of us knows anything about them is Uriel’s friendship with Hades, Persephone, and Hecate.”

“The spirits of this afterlife, if they do have some belief in alternate universes, don’t actually know for certain that they do exist. We do and we work with the people from all of them, because they all need someone to guide them and that is our job. It always has been and always will be.” Hades sighed. “Occasionally I wish it wasn’t, but I do have a choice, the same way all the deities too, and my choice is to keep working until no one needs me any more.”
