Thear: Trey: Trey’s First Encounter with Bast (part 2)

Part 1

Trey, trying to work out how he felt, stared at Bast. He’d seen pictures of her in the books and a part of him kept repeating that he was just dreaming. If any deity was going to call him it was going to be Herne because he was Dorma. Not a Tein-Igni goddess who could shape change. Unfortunately the world felt too real for him to be dreaming, as did Bast, and that meant he had a choice to make. Was he going to accept Bast as his goddess? Bast stared back at him, her head tilted to one side as she studied him.

“What would happen to me if I did follow in my father’s footsteps?” Trey asked, needing to break the silence.

“Sephy…” Bast shook her head. “Persephone told me there were two main possibilities. The first is that you’ll lead an unfulfilling life trying to live up to his expectations, which is something that you’ll never be able to do. He’s not an easy man to please.” Breathing a deep sigh she glanced away and then back at him. “The second, and most likely, is that you’ll end up dead.”

A shiver of fear went down Trey’s spine. “Why?”

“You could be asking one of two questions.”

“I’m asking both.”

Nodding, Bast almost smiled. “I’m telling you because you asked. Telling you may make a difference to the decision you’ll make and I prefer it if my priests have a chance to make a fully informed decision. If I didn’t tell you I’d never know if it could have saved you life, which is something I would regret. Death is the most likely option because of who you are. As your father’s second people will go after you first in an attempt to change what the future will be, he might end up viewing you as an enemy instead of an ally, others in the Dorma supremacist movement might come to view you as an enemy… Unfortunately that’s just the way things are. You will be in a position of power which puts you in a position of danger, too.”

“Won’t I be just as likely to end up dead if I become your priest?”

“To keep you safe and able to help us in the future I’d want you to keep your connection to me a secret.”

“Is it that simple?”

“Sometimes.” Bast brushed her own hair behind her ear as she smiled. “There are a number of priests and priestesses who are keeping their connections to the deities secret, especially those who are connected to deities that haven’t risen yet.”

“Should you be telling me as much as you are?”

“I’m not telling you any names and you have no proof that what I’ve just told you is true. You can pass the information on to your father if you wish to, but it won’t get you very far because we both know he won’t believe you if you have no evidence.”

Smiling for the first time, Trey nodded. “You’re right, but then you are a deity. It’s to be expected. I still don’t understand why you want me to be your priest.”

Heh ... people forget how subtle Bast can be when she wishes. But nobody hears a cat that doesn't want to be heard.
