Kim's Earth: In Depth
Type: post-apocalypse, set on Earth
As I said in my intro to all the collections this is a collection I created in order to explore what would happen if the apocalypse happened and the majority of people who were left were children, teenagers, or young adults. The first character I wrote about was Kim, so it became Kim's Earth, although the name may change in the future if I find one that fits better. Unfortunately, even though I would love to write more for this collection, it doesn't currently have many readers who are interested in prompting for more fiction, which really does help me when I'm planning a month of work - otherwise I'll work on other things that do have more interest as that's what people want to see.
Every one of the stories I've started are from set early in the timeline, with the latest one being about a season after the end of the world as they knew it, which was a different world to this one. I have a feeling, the way I do with other collections that this alternative Earth was created by the fae when they were playing with time, which was something one of the groups did when they realised what was coming - but by doing that they created numerous alternative Earths that weren't safe for the fae who would end up there or the people who actually had to live there. When I first started it was meant to connect with Thear as there was a time when the World Government thought a good idea to halt population growth would be sending females between the ages of 13 and 26 off in spaceships, but I think now that's an AU, as it doesn't seem to fit in with the collection as it is now.
There is still a problem with the population, unfortunately, one that none of the laws put in place to the World Government seemed to fix. Giving everyone the contraceptive injection was their last chance and it went wrong. It went wrong in such a way that the issue with the population now is that they have no idea how to survive into the winter, so that is the focus of anyone who has the intelligence to realise that nothing is going to be simple any more. Even though there are still supermarkets most of them get plundered during the early days, by those who are beginning to stockpile the goods that will keep them alive until the first harvest and by children who just want to eat sweets because there's no one there to tell them what to do (fortunately the majority of them do soon accept that they need help, otherwise they'll won't survive).
Kim was the first character I wrote about. She was one of the 'lucky' ones, because her parents sent her into hiding at the time of the injection, even though it meant they had to pay a fine. Her father was worried that the injection would go wrong and he prepared for that in the only way he could - he saved his eldest daughter, so she could be there for her brothers and the people that Michael, the eldest of the two, would inevitably invite to stay with them.
She was followed by a number of other female characters (and now that I'm looking at the landing page for this collection I've come to realise that I'm writing from the POV of only two male characters compared to the six female - not counting AUs). Poppy, Chloe, Bethany, and Skye all survived the injection. The first three have stories that start from the moment they wake up, while Skye's starts at a point during her journey from one side of the UK to the other as she and a friend look to see if any of his relatives survived. Finn, one of my two male characters, also survived the injection. He's slightly older and was a journalist, who wrote articles about the contraceptive injection with his female companion - another of the 'lucky' few who paid the fine instead of having the injection, so she could watch over the other journalists. Kate's parents also paid the fine and she's currently walking home with someone who was originally an unwanted companion that she's become grateful to have with her. Lauren hasn't told me how she survived yet. Her story is one of the latest in this collection's timeline and she returned to a place she thought of as a sanctuary only to find that it had been taken over by someone else. The more I write that story the more I find out about her and the original owner of the sanctuary: Woody. Michael, Kim's brother, is the other male character.
This is a collection I want to write more for, but when there are others that have much more interest it sometimes feels like I'm wasting my time. So if you are interested then comment on the fiction that's posted at my website or at one of my mirror sites. There are times when commenting will get you entered into a raffle in order to win more stories - the next one of these being between the 14th and the 28th of April. Getting involved also helps and this can be fanfiction (I'd love to see some stories set in other countries, as I like to keep my Earth collections set in the UK because it's where I live and I feel that knowing the places I'm writing about add realism), or creating a character, or, in this collection, creating a setting - which could be a place like Lauren's sanctuary or the house Kim ends up living in.
