The Deities’ World: Papa Legba: Choosing to Connect

This entry is part 2 of 16 in the Deities' World collection

We are together and yet we are apart. The deities, as you call them, are the same as us, but they are also very different. I’ve watched them for millennia, trying to understand them, because their connection to the many races of the multiverse is nothing like ours. Maybe their problem is that they are less patient than us, therefore they feel the need to go to the races instead of waiting for the races to come to them, the way we do and always have done. For those of you who are interested in names I am known to you as Papa Legba and I am the one who opens the door.

I have opened this door, because I feel it is for the good of the other loa… and for me, of course. For the first time I have chosen to speak of who we are, and who we were, and who we will be in the future. This may be something the others don’t appreciate, but I believe it is important that you have the chance to get to know us. Of course it is easy enough for someone to read about us on what you call the Internet, to learn what people believe us to be, and that is a worthwhile thing to do, although what they understand us to be is not necessarily who we are. I believe this has been mentioned before – conversing with the human race, with any race, is much like a game of what you call Chinese Whispers.

You will hear what you want to when we talk to you and because of this you are likely to turn us into something we are not. This is especially so for a group such as us, who chose to wait until you call, but there was a time when I did this before. Many millennia ago I made the same choice that I am making now, to connect with one of you so I could tell our story. Or, at least, a part of it. We are different to everyone and it’s very important that you remember that. As a loa of the humans race I am simply known as the Gatekeeper, but that is not all I am. Any more than Persephone is just the deity who married Hades or Hades is just the God of the Underworld.

Sharing a world does mean that we know the deities of the other, numerous, pantheons of the Earth, and of the many other worlds of the multiverse. For those of you wondering the multiverse does exist, but that is something I have no way to prove. I just know that I have connected to people of races on other Earths, as there are as many of them as there are choices that could be made in a lifetime, by every single person who currently calls the Earth their home. On one Earth you might not be sitting there reading my story, because it was never written.

The people I have always had time for are the writers of your world and the others. I connect with them better than I connect with anyone else, because they are more open to the unusual than most. Have you ever wondered if the worlds that they are writing about are real? Or maybe if the worlds become real because they’re being written about? Before I was chosen to become who I am now I wondered, although then it wasn’t so easy to find an interesting story. Now they’re all over the Internet and it’s wonderful. Every single story is worth the time that it takes to write, as there is always going to be someone reading them, even though they might not show up on your stats.

Now that is is possible I read everything that I can. Sometimes I go to find the worlds that have been mentioned in the stories and often I find that they do exist. The most interesting one was when I went searching for a world to find that it was in the process of being created. As the writer had planned for the story they were writing to be on one continent, but had shown that the world was spherical, there was this floating landmass and nothing more. When I went back after she started working on the second story, which was set on a different continent, more of the world had appeared. I kept returning there until the full world was there, and that was when I realised that it worked both ways. Some writers connect to a world and write about the people who live there, while others created a world and made it exist somewhere in the multiverse.

Unsurprisingly I have gone off topic. You will find that this happens rather a lot. It’s just the way my brain work. Hopefully this won’t put you off reading more of this, when my writer feels capable of connecting with me, as I can drain someone rather a lot when they chose to connect with me. Right now I can feel how bad she feel, and she is surprised that she is writing this when she was aiming for something really rather different, but that’s what happens when you chose to truly connect with those that you write about. She has made the right choice, in my opinion, even though it can be much harder than simply creating a new world.

What was I talking about before? Oh, yes, how each of us is different to everyone that we connect with. I am, to many, the Gatekeeper and I appear to them as they feel I should. To other races I look very different. If I get a chance I may get my writer to find someone willing to draw me in a couple of my other guises as it is important that you know who I am to them, because I will be talking about them, as often as I plan on talking about my fellow loas… and the deities that I have come to think of as friends.
