Aurora’s World: Konir: Clay: Making an Informed Decision (part 3)
“Why not?” Clay asked, sipping his tea.
“It has to do, literally, with the moment that you were born. Now if you happened to meet someone born at the very same time as you then it would be possible that their magic would work in the same way as yours, but that’s something I doubt will ever happen. Sauin was born, and bloomed, on what is now known as Sauin’s day, although once it was nothing more than the last day of the tenth moon on the year. When he did he had a number of powers, each of which was related to that day.” Jennica bit her lip. “They didn’t know until later exactly how it all worked, but they realised once they started gathering together, talking about what had happened to them, that one of their powers was related to the moon in which they were born. Someone born in the tenth moon, like Sauin, had the ability to effect all forms of water and also had memory magic, which meant they could affect their own or others memories. Fortunately it wasn’t something that he experimented with much, because he knew how dangerous it could be, but that didn’t mean there weren’t others who did.
“He met someone born three days after him and found out that she could use her magic on a different element, fire, and could fly, but that was an ability that took a lot out of her, so she didn’t use it very often. After some time talking they realised that they had one ability that was the same, which they came to understand later was the magic of the year they were born in. I wish I could tell you exactly what it was, but that is information we lost a long time ago. You might, if you go underground, find that some of what we lost is down there. There was a time when I wished I could go through the door too, because I didn’t want this job when I was young, no one ever does, but in the end I realised that I’m needed here, as much as I want to go down there and read the history books.”
“Can they not send the information you need up?”
“No, Clay. The underground is like another world, because that’s what it was created to be, so there would be a place where magic users could be safe. If someone tries to enter who hasn’t been accepted by the magic, they will end up being destroyed by the power that was used make the wards that still keep the entrances safe, and if we try to bring anything up it too is destroyed, I think because the creator of the underground never foresaw a time when it would be safe for any of the information to return to the upperworld.” Jennica sighed. “Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to join you, if indeed you chose to go underground, but it isn’t something I can see happening and if I do it won’t do anyone up here any good. Everything I learn will be trapped down there with me.”
