John was intrigued by the idea of the donor house that had been set up on the south coast. He stepped off the train, wondering what sort of vampire would come up with such an unusual idea. Knowing the names of the owners didn’t tell him anything about them, although he had heard of them a couple of times before. Overhearing a conversation between two other vampires meant that he hadn’t been able to ask questions about them or the donor house. The information he had on the donor house had been biased against it because neither of the vampires had believed that it would really work out, since it changed the relationship between vampires and humans. It had been the thought of having a different relationship with the humans he fed from that had made him decide to visit the donor house.

As John walked through the town he realised that it wasn’t more vampire-friendly than any other town he’d visited. There were three shops that were still open, which was much less than he’d been expecting. He’d thought that the town had been picked specifically because it was a good place for vampires to live. Instead it actually seemed less welcoming than a lot of towns. If you wanted somewhere that was really comfortable for all vampires then a city was the best place to go. It was that friendliness that attracted the vampires who ran the auctions, so he could understand why the donor house hadn’t been set up in a city.

It took John ten minutes to reach the donor house. He stood at the end of the driveway and looked up at it. From what he’d heard the building had once been a hotel but that wasn’t obvious from outside, apart from the size. Looking gave him a chance to gather his courage so he could walk towards the building because it had been a long time since he’d spent any time with vampires and then it had never been a large group. When he finally walked through the door he found himself in a large reception room, which was full of people.

“Can I help you?” a voice asked, making John jump.

He turned to look at where the voice had come from and saw a female vampire sitting behind a reception desk. “I don’t know,” he replied, taking a couple of steps towards the desk. “This is my first time here.”

The receptionist nodded. “I thought it was. If you’d like to write your name in the sign in book then I can get someone to show you around.”

John picked up the pen and wrote his name in the book, listening to the receptionist as he did so. “Alice, we’ve got a first-time visitor here. Are you free to show him around? I’ll give him one of the rule books and tell him you’ll be here in five minutes.”

He kept his eyes on the sign in book because Alice’s name hadn’t been one that was mentioned by the vampires. John hadn’t really expected either of the owners to show him around but it just made it more obvious that he didn’t really know anything about the donor house. Up until that point he’d been happy with the gut decision that he’d made. Breathing deeply, he turned to look at the receptionist again.

“Are you okay?” she asked, looking worried.

John nodded. “It’s just… strange.”

“That’s why someone will always show a first-time visitor around. A place like this is so very different from any other you could visit so it can be hard to get used to.” The receptionist passed him a small booklet. “Read this and take some time. If you’re really not comfortable then it would be best if you leave.”

“I understand.”

He sat down in one of the chairs that was close to the reception desk and opened the rule book, but he didn’t read the words that were written on the paper. It was hard for him to focus when he knew that there were so many vampires around. Although John knew that they had to be different to even be in the donor house in the first place he couldn’t just ignore his feelings. During the time he’d been a vampire he’d met so many that were just out for themselves that it was hard to think that any vampire would really want to spend time in a place like the donor house.

“Good evening,” a female voice said, dragging him out of his thoughts. “I’m Alice and for tonight I am your tour guide.”

John looked up at Alice and found himself smiling. It didn’t happen very often that he met a vampire he truly felt was a good person so he was surprised, and grateful, that Alice was one of them. He stood up, offering her his hand as that was something he had learnt was good manners in England. She smiled back and took it.

“I’m John,” he replied. “It’s nice to meet you, Alice.”

“Normally I wouldn’t ask something so personal, but what race are you?”

“I’m Lakota.”

“Really? I’ve never met a Native American vampire before. That’s just… wow. How did you end up here?”

“My creator was homesick and brought me back to his home country before there were rules about vampires moving between countries.”

“Would you like to go home?”

John shrugged. “It’s something I’ve thought about but I don’t know if my people would accept me back and it’s not as though I have any family left.”

“Well, maybe you can find somewhere else to call home.”

“That’s what I’ve been looking for, but it’s difficult.”

Alice nodded. “I know what you mean. There seem to be two types of vampires: good vampires and bad vampires. Unfortunately the bad vampires outnumber the good ones.”

“You’re one of the good ones.”

“I’m glad you think so. Now, I think there are a couple of people I should introduce you to and then I can show you around the house.” She smiled. “I hope it lives up to your expectations.”
