Thear: Conall: In the Moon Garden with Sophia

Written for LJ user ysabetwordsmith’s prompt: Conall and Sophia in a scent garden.

The moon garden, as well as being beautiful in its own way, was always full of scents. Conall stepped into the garden that Aisling had created behind the temple of Persephone, leading Sophia by the hand because he knew she would appreciate it even more than he did. It was something he’d never experienced before, instead spending all his life surrounded by the scent of the sea, and even if he never felt at home at North Square he would always be grateful that he’d had a chance to see and smell the moon garden.

“What does it look like?” Sophia asked, from her position in the middle of the garden.

Conall smiled. “It’s like nothing I’ve seen before, Sophia. When I heard Aisling call it a moon garden I never had any idea that all the plants, whether they’re trees or flowers, would be white or silver.”

“Describe one of the trees.”

“All around the garden are tall trees with pure white bark and silver leaves.” He knelt down underneath one of the the trees and picked up a leaf. “They shimmer in the moonlight in a way that I can’t describe and feels like…” He shook his head, walked towards Sophia and passed her the leaf. “There are times I wish you could see, because this garden is amazing.”

Their eyes met as Sophia took the leaf and she smiled. “I know why you brought me here, Conall. I can smell the garden all around me and I’ve never known anything like it. It reminds me of the time you spent teaching me the scents of all the different herbs, so I could use them in cooking or healing.” She lifted the leaf to her nose. “Even this leaf has a scent.”

“That’s why I picked it.”

“Can you teach me about the plants in the garden in the same way that you taught me about the herbs?”

“I probably couldn’t, because I don’t know enough about the plants, but there are several people here who will be able to. Aisling maybe, or one of the other High Priests and Priestesses here. They’re the ones who know all about the plants in the moon garden.” Conall looked around the garden. “From what Aisling said I think all the Highs have done something different with the gardens they inherited when they moved to North Square.”

“Are they all scented?”

“Yes, they are. Every plant in the gardens are chosen for their scent as well their colouring and it changes with each season, because of the flowering periods. The trees always add to the scent, so that is something you should pick up every time you walk into the garden, and some of the Highs add water, to include sound in the garden as well as the scent and colour.”

“That sounds lovely.” Sophia stroked the leaf she held. “Do you know which of the Highs have some sort of water in their garden?”

“I’m pretty sure Trey has some, but I’ll have to check.”

Sophia shook her head. “I’ll ask him next time I see him.” She reached out and gently touched Conall’s shoulder. “North Square is a new start for me and I want to make the most of it.”
